Taking the ferry on foot or by bike and leaving the car at home

Not every ferry crossing needs a car. Travelling as a foot passenger or with a bicycle is a different kind of journey: lighter, slower and often much simpler. You skip the queue for the vehicle deck, and you arrive with nothing to park. For families who enjoy a change, it can be a refreshing alternative to a holiday spent in the driver's seat. It does take a little planning, though.

Start by packing less. Everything you take must be carried by you, so choose a rucksack or a pair of panniers rather than several heavy bags. Lay out your things in the hall and remove anything that you will not really use. Pack waterproofs, a warm layer and a water bottle in an accessible pocket. Keep valuables and tickets close to your body, in a bag that stays with you.

Getting there and getting about

Think about how you reach the terminal. If you are walking or cycling from home, allow plenty of time, since the last stretch is often slower than expected. If you rely on a bus or a lift, arrange it in good time. Leave the car tidy and locked, with nothing valuable on show, and let a neighbour know that it will be staying at home. Check what applies where you travel.

On board, you are free to wander. Find a seat by the window or a place on deck, and enjoy the view without worrying about the car. Keep children close, particularly on stairs and outside decks, where the wind can be strong. Bicycles should be secured properly, so check that yours is not going to fall or roll. Take a light bag with snacks so that you do not have to queue for food.

Plan the onward journey before you arrive. Know how you will get to your first stop, whether on foot, by bike or by local transport. Carry a printed map or a note of the address, in case your phone runs out of battery. Travelling this way often leads to unexpected conversations and slower, more attentive days. When you get home, the car will be waiting, and you may find that you did not miss it as much as you expected.
